R.I.P. Geoffrey Lewis

Geoffrey Lewis died early this year, in April I believe, but I don’t think that many people noticed because he was not a mainstream actor. I noticed because I remember him fondly from a few of my favorite films, including Salem’s Lot (1979).

Geoffrey Lewis gets creepy in SALEM’S LOT.

I saw Salem’s Lot as a kid when it came out and it scared the living shit out of me. To this day, the vampire from that film is still the scariest out of every other vampire film I’ve watched. This scene pictured above, with Lewis in vampire makeup, scared me to death because I had relatives who would mimic it and recite the “Look at meeee…” line that his character says to the old man while he’s sitting in the dark rocking back and forth in a chair. His eyes, particularly when just visible in the shadows, were terrifying. It might look and sound hokey but when you’re a kid this kind of stuff is what nightmares are made of. Ha! So Salem’s Lot always stuck with me.

He was also in Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects (2005) and his death scene in that film is particularly brutal. And he was in Night of the Comet (1984).

I also remember Lewis from the Any Which Way But Loose (1978) series, in which he played Clint Eastwood’s sidekick, Orville. I absolutely love those films but that’s for another post.

Geoffrey Lewis was a great actor and will be missed. More on him here.
