Recently, Adriana Maestas, an independent Chicana journalist and friend, interviewed Robert Flores about his book, #FuckCancer The True Story of How Robert the Bold Kicked Cancer’s Ass, and NBC Latino picked it up! Boom! This is the first time Broken Sword Publications has received national press, so, yeah, it’s a big deal.
From the article:
“What sets Flores’s book apart from others is his raw prose where he describes being on the rollercoaster of chemotherapy, the grueling radiation treatments that zapped the tumor coming out of the skin of his left buttock, the relief that medical marijuana and his Catholic faith brought to him, and the friends and family who rallied around him as he progressed with his treatment plan.”
I don’t have to tell you that getting national press as an underground publishing house is rare, but I will anyway. Hell, despite being one of the few Chicano presses in existence, BSP is all but ignored by the so-called Latino media…which is bizarre considering the push for diversity in both publishing and mass media these days. So excuse me if I toot my horn about this a little. Ha!
Huge props to Adriana for this – speaking as an underground publishing house (and author) with no agent, virtually no publicity nor marketing to speak of, stuff like this is greatly appreciated! 😀 And props to Robert, whom deserves praise and a national platform for putting his voice out there like this.
This book breaks down boundaries because it is an honest account told from the heart. It doesn’t matter who you are or what your background is, you’ll relate to his story.
